Limited Edition Craig Alan
It would be easy to say that Populus began by accident, a happy coincidence that set Craig Alan’s popular series on its way. But in Alan’s life, there is no such thing as coincidence. Alan was visiting his mother at her condo on the beach in Florida. He took out his camera to snap some photos from her sixth-floor balcony. Down on the beach below was a wedding party, and Alan captured their celebration from afar, looking down across the sand. Later as Alan was looking through the photos, he noticed that one image resembled an eye. It was the wedding party, clustered in such a way that at a glance they ceased to be people and became pixels in a larger image. Alan jotted the idea down in one of his notebooks. He revisited the idea a couple weeks later, wondering how he could translate what he had seen in the photo into a painting. The idea for Populus was born. But it would be another 14 months before the first painting in the series was done. Alan had to start with just one little figure of a person, experimenting with the right size, color, angle and shadow. He tried about 20 different sizes before the right dimensions manifested. From one figure to an entire populace, the first painting had over 300 Lilliputian people. Alan’s vision grew in time with the collection, and the figures multiplied. Some paintings contain as many as 2500 people, although most have a community of around 600 to 1,400. Populus paintings can be found worldwide. Art collectors and celebrities alike have welcomed Alan’s diminutive people into their galleries and homes. Viewers continue to be surprised as they realize that one big painting is made up of so many small individuals. Everyone takes a closer look, wondering if they will see themselves painted into the picture.
